The University of Auckland English Language Academy (ELA)

The University of Auckland’s English Language Academy (ELA) was established over 25 years ago by world-renowned linguist Professor Rod Ellis. Since then, ELA has guided tens of thousands of students on their journey to becoming globally competent communicators. By studying with ELA, students are choosing to be part of one of the world’s Top 100 universities.

Facilities and activities available at ELA

The ELA is located in a modern building on the University of Auckland’s City Campus, in the centre of Auckland city. A large lounge with kitchen facilities and hot drinks is available for our students. Classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards.  Our Study Centre, staffed by qualified teachers is the perfect place for quiet study, tutorials or to join an academic workshop. Students have access to the main university library and sports centres, as well as to membership of over 200 university clubs and societies.

Courses available at ELA

ELA pathway programmes allow students to meet the English language requirements for both undergraduate and post graduate study at the University of Auckland and a range of other New Zealand tertiary institutions. There are five intakes every year.

Academic English courses are available for students who want to develop their language and academic skills to prepare for study success at university in the future. Students can choose to focus on either university preparation skills or IELTS preparation. There are five intakes every year.

General English is ideal for students who wish to improve their communicative abilities for social and work situations. There are 15 intakes every year.

ELA also partners with over sixty overseas universities and government organisations in the design and delivery of customised group programmes.

The style of teaching and classroom environment

ELA employs experienced teachers with degrees and TESOL qualifications, who are all dedicated to helping students achieve their goals. ELA teachers use a communicative language teaching approach, where interaction and communication are the main aims of study. Lessons involve active learning through pair and group work, in which teachers facilitate communication and provide you with every opportunity to practice your language skills.

Accommodation options for international students

ELA-organised accommodation is available with local homestay families. Many students choose to stay in a homestay for the duration of their course. Others choose to stay for the first month and then find alternative accommodation when they are more familiar with living in Auckland. For group programmes during the summer period, university residences may also be available.

A rich student experience

Choosing to study at ELA presents wonderful opportunities to engage in a range of learning interactions and activities, experience new cultures and develop lifelong friendships.
